Three of our club's Masters combined forces with one guest competitor from DesMoines Rowing Club to win a gold and five bronze medals at the Sarasota Invitational Regatta last weekend. A contested mixed quad final result may yet bring more medals before everything's all said and done.
Gold went to Jim for handily winning his flight of men's 1x. John Pokorny took home a bronze in the same men's 1x event. His medal would have been a silver or gold had he and Jim not been assigned to the same flight at the last minute due to some last-minute cancellations in the event.
Bronze went to Jim and Saundra in the mixed doubles event and another went to Saundra and Tiffani rowing the women's pair for DMRC. Not bad considering they've only rowed twice together recently! (Note for the curious: the 2- is the most technical boat to row, and either punishes or rewards any rowers who dare to row this most sophisticated sweep event.)
The mixed quad was an interesting race; our crew was third to cross the finish line, beating younger crews as well as older ones. However, due to a scribner's error, we were listed as seventh out of eight crews in our flight. This of course is an impossible outcome and it turns out the officials wrote the wrong number for one of our split times resulting in a 10-second error!
If you want to watch the race action from the comfort of your computer screen, all the races are about four minutes in length. Saundra's husband, Marc, rode his bicycle down the length of the course, avoiding pedestrians and advertising billboards while recording all four of our races in full from start to finish. You almost never get this view of racing unless you're watching an olympics event! The videos are being posted onto our All Members page as I compose this message.
